January 2016

Dear Washington Irving Families,

Happy New Year and welcome to 2016! I hope your new year celebration was safe and exciting! If you do a search online, you will find many unusual traditions from around the world such as throwing plates, jumping off chairs at midnight, hiding knives and many more.

Leek and potato soup with breadDo you have any fun family traditions? Traditions are a wonderful way to build a closer bond between you and your child(ren). If you don’t have any traditions, it’s never too late to begin. Traditions can be started at any time such as an annual Nerf war or Halloween candy trade-off. How about a special meal on the same day every year, (we do quiche on Christmas Eve.) Creating these special moments year after year are very special to your family and provides your child with a feeling of safety and security which are both vital as a foundation for learning.

Washington Irving has many fun traditions such as our weekly fanfare, our monthly spirit day and special dance of the month that our specials’ teachers lead in costume! Many teachers have created fun traditions such as basket weaving in 2nd grade, cranberry learning in 3rd grade, the fun game “Who’s That Teacher” and a yearly music show put on by Mrs. Mills and Mrs. Hahn. All of these traditions, and many others I did not list, make this a wonderful school! Just ask your kids!

So if you haven’t started one, why not add it to your new year resolution list and start a few this year?
