Dear Washington Irving Families,
February is the month in which kindness is celebrated. We will be highlighting Kindness Week this month at Washington Irving. We also integrate the life principle of kindness everyday through our Great Expectations program. Our weekly Life Principles for the month are centered on kindness. They are commitment, dependability, fairness, tolerance, and courage. As a staff, we model these Life Principles and show the students how to apply them, and then we ask our students to apply them. Research shows that teaching and modeling character traits improves the lives of children, enabling them to succeed.
February is an exciting month. We will be hosting our Open House and Health Fair on February 4th starting at 5:30 pm and ending at 7:30 pm. We have a lot planned for you and your child/children to enjoy. More information about our Open House activities is on the next page of this newsletter. Please try to stop by the OTISS tiered supports presentation in the Media Center at 6:00.
Valentine’s Day celebrations will be held on the 12th. There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, February 15th, as the teachers will be attending professional meetings on that day. Our fifth grade students will be taking the state writing tests on February 23rd. Fifth grade families, please have your students well-rested, on time, and ready to write! Finally, we have our Family Bingo Night from 6:30 – 8:30 pm on Friday, the 26th. Please come join us at this fun event!
All of the above activities are possible for our students and families due to great efforts from our Washington Irving staff and our PTO. Our PTO volunteers do such an amazing job and spend so much precious time giving back to Washington Irving’s students and teachers. In addition, our PTO fulfilled multiple teacher grants by purchasing a variety of items to supplement our curriculum and enhance learning of our students. Thank you to all of our families for donating to our fundraisers and providing such wonderful teaching tools. We are very fortunate at Washington Irving to have such supportive, giving families.
